How Prakash Hinduja’s noble vision is impacting healthcare in India
While philanthropist Prakash Hinduja invests his and his family fortune in numerous valuable social causes, healthcare is probably the closest to his heart. His guiding philosophy is noble: healthcare should not be a privilege of the rich minority but a fundamental right. That is, healthcare has to be universally accessible.
The medical endeavors of the Hinduja Group continue a rich legacy that starts with the founder of the family, Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja. Their charity work even today is still influenced by his ethos of ‘Work to give’. A powerful illustration of the group’s societal contribution is Mumbai’s P.D. Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre, a non-profit-making organization that focuses on integrating the best medical technology with humanitarianism. It consistently gets ranked among the best hospitals in India.
"Healthcare is about giving people the tools they need to live better, more satisfying lives, not only about curing diseases. Through our hospitals, we are committed to ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder anyone from receiving quality medical treatment,” says Prakash Hinduja, who’s the managing trustee of the Hinduja Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Hinduja Group.
Prakash Hinduja has repeatedly emphasized the role of preventive healthcare. Says Switzerland-based Prakash Hinduja, “Our hospitals are actively engaged in promoting early detection of diseases, lifestyle management, and wellness programs that encourage people to take charge of their health before complications arise.”
Not surprisingly, the programs offered by PD Hinduja national hospital involve chronic disease screening systems, educating on mental wellness, and promoting lifestyle changes. All of these break free from the paradigm of reactive or crisis-oriented healthcare.
The healthcare vision of Prakash Hinduja is founded on three pillars: clinical excellence, economic access and geographic coverage. "Healthcare is about giving people the tools they need to live better, more satisfying lives, not only about curing diseases,” says Prakash Hinduja. Geneva is the base from which Prakash Hinduja formulates the foundation’s healthcare strategy.
The foundation has a stellar track record of rolling out programs and initiatives to assist the underserved groups of people in the country. Introduced in August 2025, the Dedicated Geriatric Clinic at the hospital will serve senior citizens above 65. Then there’s ‘Serve with Passion’. The program's aim is to being free, quality healthcare to underserved tribal and remote areas in Maharashtra and Gujarat using mobile health units. "The disparity in health facilities, even in areas close to large cities, like Mumbai, is appalling. The consequences of illness are often debilitating both physically and economically. Certain remote villages do not even have basic medicines. The mission of Hinduja Hospital's Rural Health Program is to help in early detection of illness or better still prevention through health awareness," says Usha Raheja, board member at the hospital.
